Frequently Asked Questions

The scheme is being funded by the OPW. As part of the Government’s National Development plan to 2030, €1.3 billion has been committed to the development of flood relief measures across Ireland.

The scheme will improve the standard of flood protection for Dundalk/Blackrock and Ardee to protect against the 1% Annual Exceedance Probability (1 in 100 year) fluvial (river) flood event, and a 0.5% Annual Exceedance Probability (1 in 200 year) coastal flood event.

It is scheduled to be completed in 2029, if you would like a full breakdown of the timescale please go to the ‘Timeframe‘ section of the website.

Enhancements to the local public realm and environment will be considered throughout all phases of the project, including the provision of a new Greenway which will form part of ‘The Great Eastern Greenway’. Where possible, grass embankments will be incorporated instead of hard defences.

A key consideration in our design is to ensure that the scheme does not increase the risk of flooding in other places. We will consider the impacts on the wider Dundalk/Blackrock and Ardee areas, rather than just focusing on the places that have flooded.

You can look at the flood maps on the OPW’s CFRAM website to see the flood extents for Dundalk/Blackrock and other towns within the CFRAM study area here.

All the environmental surveys, assessments and documentation will be in accordance with the EU, National, Regional, and local environmental and ecological legislation.

We will be keeping this website updated with the latest news and details of forthcoming public information events.  You can also use the ‘Contact us’ page to ask a question or provide feedback or register to be emailed with project updates.
