September 2026 Survey Update

Traffic Surveys

Kerry County Council has appointed IDASO Ltd as the traffic survey specialist for the Tralee Flood Relief Scheme (FRS).

IDASO Ltd will undertake traffic surveys in Tralee from Monday 14th September 2026. The surveys are provisionally anticipated to be completed by Wednesday 23rd September 2026.

The surveys will be undertaken at key roads and junctions to develop an understanding of existing traffic movements within the survey area. The information gathered will be used to inform the design and assessment of the proposed FRS and will contribute to the Environmental Impact Assessment Report (EIAR) required as part of the planning and consent process.

The surveys will use a combination of Automatic Traffic Counters (ATCs) and Junction Turning Counts (JTCs).

• ATCs record the number and type of vehicles using a road over a set period,
• JTCs record vehicle movements through a junction.

Temporary JTC survey cameras will also be utilised at selected locations to capture traffic activity.

The traffic surveys will be undertaken at a number of junctions and roads in and around Tralee. The locations are grouped below:

The JTC cameras will be installed Monday 14th September and will be collected on Wednesday 17th September. The cameras will be used for traffic survey purposes only. They are not being installed for general surveillance. 

Noise Monitoring Surveys

Tetra Tech (formerly RPS) will undertake noise monitoring surveys in September 2026.

The purpose of the surveys is to establish the existing baseline noise levels within the survey area. This information will be used to inform the design and assessment of the proposed FRS and will contribute to the Environmental Impact Assessment Report (EIAR) required for planning and consent.

Archaeological Walkover Surveys

Archaeological Management Solutions (AMS), the archaeological specialist appointed to the project, will undertake archaeological walkover surveys of the emerging preferred option in September 2026.

The surveys will involve walking the footprint of the emerging proposed scheme and recording, documenting and categorising any archaeological features identified. The findings will be used to inform further detailed archaeological surveys required and will inform the ongoing development of the scheme.

Invasive Species Treatment

Envirico Ltd will be on site during September 2026 to undertake the treatment of Japanese Knotweed in selected areas where it may affect the development of the Tralee Flood Relief Scheme.

The treatment works are intended to manage the spread of Japanese Knotweed and reduce the risk of it affecting future investigation, construction and other activities associated with the scheme.

Survey Works Completed in 2026

Topographical Surveys

In May 2026, Murphy Geospatial Ltd completed a topographical survey of the footprint of the emerging preferred option.

The survey recorded the existing ground levels and features within the survey area. The information was used to inform the tree surveys undertaken by Arborcare and will also be important for assessing the buildability of the scheme and progressing the detailed design.

Tree Surveys

In June 2026, Arborcare completed a tree survey of trees that could potentially be affected by the emerging preferred option.

The survey involved identifying and recording the trees within the footprint of the emerging preferred option and assessing their characteristics, including their condition, size, and maturity.

This will help to inform the ongoing design of the scheme and will contribute to the Environmental Impact Assessment Report (EIAR).

Detailed Ecology Surveys

Tetra tech completed the Aquatic Ecology Surveys and Bat Surveys in Tralee. These surveys will help to inform the ongoing development of the scheme and will contribute to the Environmental Impact Assessment Report (EIAR).
