Lord Mayor of Cork welcomes confirmation of the Glashaboy River (Glanmire/Sallybrook) Drainage Scheme

The Minister for Public Expenditure and Reform has confirmed the Glashaboy River (Glanmire/Sallybrook) Drainage Scheme. The purpose of this Scheme is to provide people and properties in the Glanmire area with protection from potential 1 in 100 year fluvial (river) and 1 in 200 year tidal flood events in the Glashaboy river and its tributaries.

The scheme extends over approximately 4 km of the Glashaboy River, and lengths of various tributaries including: appropriately 0.5 km of the Butlerstown Stream; approximately 1.8. km of Glenmore Stream (a tributary of Butlerstown Stream); and short lower reaches of various other tributaries.

Significant flooding occurred on June 2012 in the Glanmire/Sallybrook area. As a result, Cork County Council, acting as Agents for the Office of Public Works (OPW) commissioned Ove Arup & Partners Ireland Ltd. in association with JBA Consulting to develop a Flood Relief Scheme for Glanmire/Sallybrook. Since the boundary change on 31st May 2019, Cork City Council has become the OPW’s agent for the scheme supported by Cork County Council’s project management team.

In October 2018, the Glashaboy Flood Relief Scheme was submitted by the OPW to the Minister for Public Expenditure and Reform for formal Confirmation, under the provisions of the Arterial Drainage Acts, accompanied by an Environmental Impact Assessment Report (EIAR) and Natura Impact Statement (NIS).

Lord Mayor of Cork, Cllr Joe Kavanagh warmly welcomed the news: “The businesses and residents of the Riverstown/ Glanmire have endured significant flooding events in recent years and I am delighted that this announcement finally brings some good news for them.” 

Chief Executive of Cork City Council, Ann Doherty said that the City Council would continue to work closely with Cork County Council and the OPW to advance the project to construction stage as soon as possible.
