Invasive Plant Species Survey & Treatment 2023-2024

May 2023

Last year Cork County Council appointed Japanese Knotweed Ireland to carry out survey and treatment works for Invasive Alien Plant Species over a 2-year period. The survey includes lands along water bodies within the Scheme Boundary i.e., the Owenacurra and Dungourney Rivers, as well as the Ballinacurra and Water Rock Streams.

This two-year contract includes removal of Himalayan Balsam which will take place in May this year, and treatment of Japanese Knotweed (and other species) in August/September.  In advance of these works, surveyors from Japanese Knotweed Ireland may require access to your lands.  We would appreciate your cooperation in this regard.  2023 will be the 7th year of treatment of Japanese Knotweed in the area, and the ongoing treatment of Japanese Knotweed is having positive effects in terms of limiting regrowth, thereby reducing the risk of blockages in water courses. The additional treatment of Himalayan Balsam will also have positive effects.

Please do not strim or cut Japanese Knotweed if you encounter it.
