Arboricultural Tree Survey Report 2023
September 2023
In July of this year, Cork County Council appointed TreeSpace Ltd to carry out an Arboricultural tree survey along the route of the emerging preferred option for the Midleton Flood Relief Scheme. This survey was required, so that the impact of the scheme can be minimised in so far as is feasible, through the planning design stage.
The survey assessed the arboricultural features (i.e. trees) within the area surveyed and includes recommendations for future management. Trees are given a unique ID and are categorised as category A, B, C, or U as explained below.
Category | Description |
A | Trees of high quality with an estimated remaining life expectancy of at least 40 years. |
B | Trees of moderate quality with an estimated remaining life expectancy of at least 20 years. |
C | Trees of low quality with an estimated remaining life expectancy of at least 10 years, or young trees with a stem diameter below 150 mm. |
U | Trees in such a condition that they cannot realistically be retained as living trees in the context of the current land use for longer than 10 years. |
In a number of instances, the survey recommends the removal of trees, the removal of deadwood or tree surgery to remove defective branches. If unsafe trees are required to be removed as part of the construction of the Midleton Flood Relief Scheme this will be done. However, the Scheme is a number of years away from construction and at present, it is not proposed to carry out tree removal of private trees. Responsibility for maintenance of private trees remains with the landowner.
