Underwater Archaeology Surveys

September 2024

Ryan Hanley, in collaboration with Underwater Archaeology Survey specialists, ADCO Ltd. (www.adco-ie.com) will deploy an archaeological team to conduct terrestrial walkover, bankside, waded and underwater survey in the Ballinasloe FRS Scheme area to further inform Cultural Heritage baseline information.

Archaeology Survey will be mainly concentrated within the Suck River and its tributaries and also focus on riverbanks. Access to the river will primarily be from the Ballinasloe Marina, however access through some lands to the River or Bridges may be required in Kilclooney, Derrymullen, Deerpark or other areas within Ballinasloe.

The work will seek to confirm the presence of any registered cultural heritage sites, identify previously unregistered sites, and record in-water features that may be observed in the course of survey, and the proximity of any proposed FRS works to them. The survey will be non-intrusive, and the information gathered will be instrumental in progressing the Ballinasloe FRS in protection of properties.

The archaeological surveys, set to commence in September 2024, will be conducted during normal working hours under a Licence from the National Monument Service (NMS) and concentrate where measures are proposed.

For any inquiries or concerns, please contact Henry Kenny at KennyH@ryanhanley.ie or by phone at +353 (0) 91 587 116.

Bat Surveys

July 2024

Ryan Hanley, in collaboration with specialist bat surveyors from Bat Ecoservices, intend to conduct supplementary bat surveys in the Ballinasloe FRS Scheme area to further inform the ecological baseline. The surveys will be undertaken between Tuesday 23rd and Thursday 25th July 2024.

The bat surveys will consist of walking transects in the Deerpark and Derrymullen areas, areas to the rear of Station Road & Sarsfield Road and lands adjacent to The Pines and Portnick. Static Survey Monitoring Devices will also be set up in these areas to record the nocturnal echolocation sounds of Bats.

Surveys will be non-intrusive but will have to be undertaken outside daylight hours including dawn or dusk and at night in darkness when bats are most active. Because some buildings and roof spaces are suitable roost sites for bats, close examination in daytime followed by night-time detector surveys may form part of the surveys. Landowners have been informed of the surveys where contact details are available.

For any inquiries or concerns, please contact Henry Kenny at KennyH@ryanhanley.ie or by phone at +353 (0) 91 587 116.
