Athy Flood Relief Scheme

Kildare County Council (KCC) and the Office of Public Works (OPW) have enlisted the services of RPS to undertake the comprehensive design of a Flood Relief Scheme for Athy. The initiative stems from the South-East Catchment Flood Risk Assessment and Management (CFRAM) Study conducted in 2017, wherein Athy emerged as an Area for Further Assessment (AFA). The study conclusively recommended the implementation of a flood relief scheme, deeming it both viable and effective for the community.

Athy, situated along the River Barrow, has a history of recurrent flooding events originating from the River Barrow itself and its tributaries. Areas affected by flooding include Corran Ard Estate, R417, Monasterin Road and various roads and fields in the vicinity of the town.

The primary objectives of this undertaking are:

  • The identification, design, and submission (for Planning or Confirmation) of a flood relief scheme, that is technically, socially, environmentally, and economically acceptable, to alleviate the risk of flooding to the community of Athy,
  • And to procure, manage and oversee the construction of that Scheme.

This scheme will be implemented in five different stages over a nine-year period. These stages include:

  1. Identification and Development of a Preferred Scheme
  2. Planning / Development Consent
  3. Detailed Construction Design, Work Packages and Tenders for Contracts
  4. Construction
  5. Handover of Works

Stage I is currently ongoing having commenced in October 2023.

This website has been set up to provide information to anyone who is interested in the scheme and to keep you informed of the project’s progress.
