Public and Stakeholder Engagement

To facilitate for the development of the scheme, Kildare County Council (KCC) are seeking public opinion and local knowledge of flooding within and around the Athy area. Several Public Consultation Events and Stakeholders Workshops are to be held over the duration of the project.

The Opening Public Consultation event took place on the 27th of February 2024 in the Athy Town Library from 12pm to 7pm. The purpose of this events was to identify key issues and highlight points of local importance which will help inform the design of potential flood alleviation measures.

Collaborative Workshops will be undertaken with representatives from several stakeholder bodies. The purpose of these Workshops will be to establish goals and objectives from each relevant section within Kildare County Council responsible for key issues such as planning, enhancement of public realm, heritage, recreation, biodiversity, etc. This collaborative approach to public sector works will inform design features and bring added value to the project resulting in a more locally valuable and acceptable scheme.

Later in Stage 1, a second PPD shall be held to gather views on the developed scheme options. The disadvantages and advantages of each option will be indicated for each scheme.

A third PPD will be held once a preferred option has been identified and agreed with the Steering Group. This PPD will give information on the dimensions of the proposed works, likely impacts during construction, the public real and place-making aspects, and the wider benefits offered by the preferred scheme.

The date for PPD 2 and 3 will be scheduled in due course.

The comments and queries raised at the public participation days will be considered in the finalisation of the Scheme design and the preparation of the EIAR (Environmental Impact Assessment Report).

If you have any information that you feel would be beneficial to the scheme, please contact the project team – here
