Public and Stakeholder Engagement

To facilitate for the development of the scheme, Kildare County Council (KCC) are seeking public opinion and local knowledge of flooding within and around the Athy area. Several Public Participation Days (PPD's) and Stakeholders Workshops are to be held over the duration of the project.

The Opening PPD event took place on the 27th of February 2024 in the Athy Town Library from 12pm to 7pm. The purpose of this event was to identify key issues and highlight points of local importance to help inform the design of potential flood alleviation measures. The second PPD took take place on Thursday 24th July 2025.

A third PPD will be held once a preferred option has been identified and agreed with the Steering Group. This PPD will give information on the dimensions of the proposed works, likely impacts during construction, the public real and place-making aspects, and the wider benefits offered by the preferred scheme. This will be scheduled in early 2026.

Collaborative Workshops are being undertaken with representatives from several stakeholder bodies. The purpose of these Workshops is to establish goals and objectives from each of these bodies, including the relevant sections within Kildare County Council responsible for key issues such as planning, enhancement of public realm, heritage, recreation, biodiversity, etc. This collaborative approach to public sector works will inform design features and bring added value to the project resulting in a more locally valuable and acceptable scheme.

The comments and queries raised at the public participation days and the collaborative workshops will be considered in the finalisation of the Scheme design and the preparation of the EIAR (Environmental Impact Assessment Report).

If you have any information that you feel would be beneficial to the scheme, please contact the project team – here
